Refuse Collection

Wheelie bins are provided for household waste and collections are normally made in Crossgates on Mondays, Edge Dell, Seamer and Irton of Fridays. There is a charge of £16 for up to three items for this service. For more information and to book a collection please contact Customer First on 01723 232323. Alternatively residents can take their waste free of charge to the household Waste Recycling Centre at Dunslow Road, Eastfield.

Opening times:   April - Sept       8:30 a.m. - 7 p.m.

                         Oct - March      8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m.

                         Nov - Feb         8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Recycling success!

During October 2007 a NEW recycling collection service was rolled out to the entire Borough with every household receiving a blue bin or sack to recycle their plastic bottles, paper, card, food and drink cans, and aerosols.

The Borough's recycling rate has increased greatly so far and the amount of refuse ending up in landfill has been reduced significantly. We are making fantastic leaps towards meeting, and with extra effort exceeding, a recycling target of 40% by 2010.

Support from the Borough has been fantastic with most residents keen to take part in the recycling scheme, which is very simple to follow as all recyclables go into the blue bin or sack mixed; the materials do not need to be separated first. Residents can also take part in the ever popular garden waste collection service, which was extended all year round and collects garden waste in a brown bin or the special biodegradable bags. If you haven't got a brown bin yet (one-off payment of £20) you can call Customer First on 01723 232323 to order yours today. They make a huge saving for the keen gardener and are much easier to manoeuvre around the garden.

Residents can recycle their glass bottles and jars at one of the many mini-recycling centres in the Borough. Do you know where your nearest recycling centre is? To find out call Customer First on 01723 232323 and start recycling your glass.

The variety of materials we can recycle in the Borough has increased following the expansion of some of the mini-recycling centres to include textile, book and carton recycling banks.

Every little helps, so use your blue bin or sack and do your bit to make the Borough of Scarborough a greener place to live.

For further information on the recycling scheme please visit www.scarborough.gov.uk/recycling or call Customer First on 01723 232323.

Batteries

Batteries are recyclable and can be taken to special battery boxes located at any of the Customer First Centres, the nearest being St Nicholas street, Scarborough or The Evron Centre, Filey. Batteries are potentially hazardous to the environment if land filled, they can pollute watercourses as they leak their highly toxic contents. Do the positive thing, and recycle your batteries.

Biodegradable Dog Bags

These special biodegradable dog bags are the environmentally friendly way to dispose of your dog waste. Over 1000 tonnes of dog waste are land filled everyday in the UK, and as most of this material is placed in plastic bags, it prevents the waste from decomposing. The new biodegradable bags break down in partnership with the waste over a period of just 40 days. Simply visit one of the Tourist Information Centres or Customer First Centres in the Borough to purchase your supply of bags at a cost of £1.25 for 50.

Home Composting

Scarborough Borough council has teamed with 'Recycle Now' to offer you subsidised home composting bins and accessories. There are three composting bins suitable for different family and garden sizes, with the cheapest priced at £8 (including free delivery). For more information, or to order your composter, visit www.recyclenow.com/compost or call 0845 077 0757

Objectives:

1. To increase the levels of participation by those aged 13+ particularly those in the priority groups - in Community Education activity.

2. To continue to develop opportunities through partnerships with Statutory and Voluntary Sector Organisations and Agencies.

How to Prepare for a Flood

Make sure you have adequate insurance. Flood damage can be included in most buildings insurance policies but do check your home and contents are covered.

Make up a flood kit - including key personal documents, torch, battery or wind up radio, mobile phone, rubber gloves, wellington boots, waterproof clothing, first aid kit and blankets.

Keep details of your insurance policy and the emergency contact numbers somewhere safe - preferably as part of your flood kit.

Make a list of other useful numbers you may need - your local council, emergency services and 'Floodline' quick dial number.

Get into the habit of storing valuable or sentimental items and important documents upstairs or in a high place.

Obtain some sandbags or flood boards to block doorways and airbricks. In an emergency, make sandbags using old pillowcases, carrier bags or even tights filled with sand or earth.

Make sure you know where to turn off your gas, electricity and water supplies. If you are not sure, ask the people who check your meters when they next visit. Mark the tap or switch with a sticker to help you remember.

How to Cope with a Flood

Turn off the gas, electric and water at the mains
If it is safe to do so, disconnect cookers, white goods etc from rigid pipes
Unplug all electrical appliances and move upstairs if possible
Lift as many items as possible above floor level using bricks, blocks etc
Weigh down heavy items to prevent floating which could cause other damage in the home
Hang up curtains on their rods or runners
Protect all essential documents and the copy of emergency numbers in plastic bags and keep upstairs
Block air bricks - use sandbags and plastic sheeting
Put the plugs in baths and washbasins and weigh down with heavy objects
Block toilets with a sandbag in the toilet and a sandbag on the cover
Weigh down any manholes on your property with sandbags or something heavy
