Community
Education Mission (NYCC)
The Community Education in North Yorkshire in partnership with other
agencies will seek to provide and co-ordinate opportunities for lifelong
learning which respond to locally determined needs and are accessible to
all.
Objectives:
1. To increase the levels of participation by those aged 13+
particularly those in the priority groups - in Community Education
activity.
2. To continue to develop opportunities through partnerships with
Statutory and Voluntary Sector Organisations and Agencies.
3. To continue to develop Community Education opportunities away from
the main centre(s) of activity in the District in order to increase access
to education and training to those for whom geographical location presents
a barrier to their participation.

How
to Prepare for a Flood
 |
Make sure
you have adequate insurance. Flood damage can be included in most
buildings insurance policies but do check your home and contents are
covered. |
 |
Make up a
flood kit - including key personal documents, torch, battery or wind
up radio, mobile phone, rubber gloves, wellington boots, waterproof
clothing, first aid kit and blankets. |
 |
Keep details
of your insurance policy and the emergency contact numbers somewhere
safe - preferably as part of your flood kit. |
 |
Make a list
of other useful numbers you may need - your local council, emergency services and
'Floodline' quick dial number. |
 |
Get into the
habit of storing valuable or sentimental items and important
documents upstairs or in a high place. |
 |
Obtain some
sandbags or flood boards to block doorways and airbricks. In an
emergency, make sandbags using old pillowcases, carrier bags or even
tights filled with sand or earth. |
 |
Make sure
you know where to turn off your gas, electricity and water supplies.
If you are not sure, ask the people who check your meters when they next
visit. Mark the tap or switch with a sticker to help you remember. |
| How to
Cope with a Flood
|
 |
Turn off the gas, electric and water at the mains |
 |
If it is safe to do so, disconnect cookers, white goods etc from
rigid pipes |
 |
Unplug all electrical appliances and move upstairs if possible |
 |
Lift as many items as possible above floor level using bricks,
blocks etc |
 |
Weigh down heavy items to prevent floating which could cause other
damage in the home |
 |
Hang up curtains on their rods or runners |
 |
Protect all essential documents and the copy of emergency numbers in
plastic bags and keep upstairs |
 |
Block air bricks - use sandbags and plastic sheeting |
 |
Put the plugs in baths and washbasins and weigh down with heavy
objects |
 |
Block toilets with a sandbag in the toilet and a sandbag on the
cover |
 |
Weigh down any manholes on your property with sandbags or something
heavy |
| |
|
